Our last post for 2014: As we say farewell to 2014, we wanted - TopicsExpress

Our last post for 2014: As we say farewell to 2014, we wanted to take a moment and reflect back on this year and share with you some of our experiences and highlights of the year. To say it’s been a busy year would be an understatement. We responded to almost 30,000 calls for service from our community in addition to our officers handling almost 33,000 separate incidents of proactive, self-initiated work. We are facing new challenges of dealing with increased property crime, increase in our homeless and mentally ill population, and adjusting to new legislation of less (or no) jail time for convicted criminals. Meeting with many of you at our community meetings (and our Coffee with a Cop events), you have told us that these are important issues to you and we are working on addressing them with new programs, meetings with community groups, training, and additional resources. Community Policing is at the core and culture of our Department. With programs such as our Coffee with a Cop events, District Policing, Social Media interaction, and Community Oriented Policing programs (COR-checks) conducted daily by our Patrol Officers, we have worked hard in building trust and maintaining positive relationships with our community. We know this is earned, never granted. We will continue to work hard in maintaining your trust in us. And a few quick acknowledgements: Our uniformed officers in Patrol rarely get recognized for their daily excellence in keeping our streets safe. Despite the increased challenges and difficult climate (especially these past few months), our officers continue to respond to the communitys calls with the utmost in professionalism to solve the problems presented to them. There is nothing easy when it comes to solving crime. Its never like TV. Our Investigators in the Detective Bureau and the Special Operations Bureau put in long hours in making sure criminals are apprehended. Their hard work often goes unnoticed. Hours are spent preparing for court cases, interviewing suspects and witnesses, serving warrants to arrest violent criminals , and coordinating with forensics to gather important evidence. That’s just a small part of what our Investigators do, but it is an integral part of our mission and service to our community. As we shared a few photos here on FB, our Traffic officers handled many DUI accidents that resulted in serious injuries and death this year. However, even with a heavy workload and limited resources, they are out working tonight as part of a DUI taskforce as you read this. #dontdrinkanddrive As for this HPD Facebook page (along with our other social media accounts on Twitter, Instagram, Nixle, and Nextdoor), our goal and vision remains the same from day one: To inform, engage, and communicate with not only Hawthorne residents but to anyone who cares about this community. For those that have been with us since the beginning, thank you for your continued support (and even your critiques, we do read your feedback!). For those that have recently started following us, we hope the information we provide is valuable and engaging to you. And lastly, we want to recognize our families reading this post. For us, this is our job. But it is our families that have to sacrifice the most. Long hours away on the job do not make for an easy time at home. We want you to know that it is because of the sacrifices you make at home that we are able to do good police work and provide the best public safety we can. And thats it. We wish everyone a safe New Years! From all of us at HPD December, 2014
