Our lesson today was brought to us today by Bro. Larry Lay of the El Cajon congregation. The title of his sermon was entitled “Angels.” Each and every one of us believes in angels to one extent or the other. There are many scriptures in the Bible that enforce the belief that angels have existed and had contact with man many times throughout the history of the Bible. Angels have appeared many times as messengers of God and both relayed God’s messages and have also assisted his followers. In Genesis 19:1 we see two angels who came to warn Lot to flee the city of Sodom because it was to be destroyed. When they approached he knew they were angels and rose to meet them and bowed as they approached. When Jesus was tempted by the devil in Mark 1:13, we are told that after he resisted Satan that the angels came and ministered unto him. After Jesus rose from the grave, it was angels that first told the women at the tomb and the apostles that Jesus had risen from the dead. Although angels are an important part of God’s plan and figure greatly in the execution of many of his commands we see that they are still in subjection to God. It was indeed an angel that opposed God and was thrown from heaven. We need to remember that obedience to God is paramount if we want to be with him in heaven. 2 Peter 2:4 tells us, “ For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;” We learn how truly important it is for us to give heed to the teachings we learn from the Bible. Heb 2:1-3 reminds us, “Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;” We find that Jesus himself was made lower than the angels when he came to earth so that he could through his death set us free. Hebrews 2:9 tells us, “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.” Although the Bible does not say that every person has his own guardian angel, it does reference protection that the angels give his children. Matthew 18:10 tells us,” Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.” He also tells us that we need to show love to all because we never know when our love might be shown to an angel. Hebrews 13:2 (NIV) tells us, “ Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” Our main focus should always be centered on doing the right things so that when the end of time comes and Christ returns with his angels, we will be able to be ready to enter heaven with him. We are encouraged in Mark 13:27, “And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.” When we join him in heaven we will be able to live with him forever along with his angels. Luke 20:36 tells us, “Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.” Lesson Summary written by Ken D. French
