Our little patient Ginger got a great early Christmas present this week. Thanks to Dr. Dosch this little dog is no longer suffering from bladder stones. The picture on the top shows the stones in the bladder (on the right side of the picture they look like numerous little white rocks) and the picture on the bottom shows the stones after they were taken out of the dog (a spoon was placed beside the stones for size reference). Bladder stones in dogs can be caused by metabolic issues involving how the body deals with certain minerals. Signs and symptoms can sometimes mimic a urinary tract infection, such as urinating small amounts around the house, or blood in the urine. In extreme cases these stones can become lodged in the urethra causing an emergency situation. This is usually a genetic disorder and in order to help slow down or in some cases stop the formation of these stones dogs need to be placed on a special diet.
