Our look at North Carolina’s Classic Hikes in preparation for hiking them in 2015 continues today with a trip to Linville Gorge Wilderness. This nearly 12,000-acre wilderness in the Pisgah National Forest has been described as some of the most rugged terrain on the East Coast. And that’s true, if you descend into the gorge one of the trails that drops up to 2,000 vertical feet from the west rim to the Linville River. Fallen hemlocks, rock outcrops, steep drops and the unruly Linville River help the gorge earn its reputation. Yet you don’t have to be an intrepid explorer to hike the Linville area. A trail that runs the length of the east rim, from Shortoff Mountain to Table Rock Mountain, is, for the most part, a flat, easy hike — with great views of the gorge below. And at Table Rock, geography has conspired to provide a relatively easy access into the gorge. The hiking here is more accessible than you might think. It’s this paradox of passages — along with great scenery — that has earned the Linville Gorge a spot in our #GetHiking! North Carolina’s Classic Hikes lineup for 2015. Each month we’ll hike one of the trails that has helped North Carolina earn a reputation as one of the top hiking destinations in the country. We’ll have a kickoff event for #GetHiking! North Carolina’s Classic Hikes in January, but you can sign up for the program today.
