Our mentor and Justice Committee co-founder Richie Perez could not - TopicsExpress

Our mentor and Justice Committee co-founder Richie Perez could not be prouder or happier with the work Yul-san Liem has been doing on behalf of victims of police abuse. Her birthday wish was simply to support the ongoing work of the JC. Below is a letter that spells out the work the JC has been doin and the link is to the JC website where you can make your contribution. Please support any way you can!: Dear Justice Committee Supporters: As we enter the time for reflecting on this past year and planning for the next, we invite you to join our struggle by making a contribution to the Justice Committee. Right now is a terrific time to donate, because your gift will be matched dollar for dollar! 2013 has been a year of excitement, hard work, and tremendous victories. To share just a few of our recent accomplishments, this year we: Worked side-by-side with our allies in Communities United for Police Reform to organize town halls and press conferences, conduct outreach, and rally at City Hall (nearly weekly!) to ensure the passage of the Community Safety Act. (#SoreLoser Bloomberg is making a last stand by attempting to appeal one of the two CSA bills, but we beat him before and, with your help, we can do it again!) Expanded NYC’s “culture of Cop Watch” by building our teams in Upper Manhattan, the South Bronx and Jackson Heights, coordinating the citywide Cop Watch Alliance with CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities and Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, and co-hosting a National Cop Watch Conference. Coordinated a team of family members of those killed by the NYPD to organize Mothers Cry for Justice, an action and performance dedicate to mothers who have lost children to police violence. As you know, it takes love, commitment and financial resources to train new leaders, conduct Know Your Rights trainings, distribute outreach materials, put Cop Watch teams on the streets, and organize events and actions. Thank you to all our supporters who made our 2013 achievements possible! Many of you knew or know of our founder, former Young Lord, educator and social justice leader, Richie Perez. Before Richie passed in 2004, he charged the Justice Committee to “up the ante” in our struggle against police violence and systemic racism in NYC. This year, we can confidently say we have stepped up to meet this mandate. Your support will be crucial as we continue to up the ante in the coming year. Thanks to two of our generous supporters, any contribution made to the Justice Committee will be matched dollar for dollar up to $10,000, but we need to raise $5,000 of this before the end of the year. Your contributions will help us to: Train and resource Cop Watch teams across the city; Bring together families who have lost loved ones to the NYPD to demand justice and police accountability; Compile submissions of our Call to Artists and release a mixtape of original music dedicated to the families; Develop community-based leadership through an internship program for young New Yorkers of color; Defend and implement the Community Safety Act; and much, much more!
