Our morning Word of the Day today is the word; PEACE. The Word of the Day program is presented by John Maxwell and the Minute with Maxwell team on a daily basis. Namaste The late Martin Luther King, Jr. is quoted as saying, “I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.” When we use the word ‘peace’ we are using it in many ways. There’s wishing one another love and happiness in the forthcoming day. In the Catholic Church as well as others, they close with the saying, “may ‘peace’ be with you”. There’s also ‘peace’ meaning the absence of war and violence. Even the word NAMASTE, if taken to heart, refers to ‘peaceful’ intentions. Freelance writer, Dorothy Thompson has been quoted as saying in reference to ‘peace’ as being, “not the absence of conflict but the presence of creative alternatives for responding to conflict - alternatives to passive or aggressive responses, alternatives to violence.” As a child of the 60’s and 70’s with the anti-war movement going full steam against the Vietnam War, I watched as hundreds of American soldiers were brought home in body bags for what was then thought of as an unjust war. I watched as human bodies were flopped around like rag dolls plied up in mass piles for burial in pits and then burned so as not to leave any odor in South Vietnam. It was sickening! Is it any wonder why I was so anti war, as were many of my generation? Mind you, I said anti-war and not anti soldier!!! In many cases men and women were pulled off the street and away from their families, friends and jobs to fight on the front line of that unjust war. The 60’s and 70’s brought an end to more than the Nixon Administration but also to the draft and brought, for short period of time, the absence of war. Oh, the ‘peace movement’! Born of the ‘peace movement’ were bands like John Lennon’s “Plastic Ono Band”, Crosby, Stills and Nash and The Jimmi Hendrix Experience, just to name a few… Those bands, as well as the leaders of the Civil Rights movement strived for ‘peace’. People like Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa and the recently departed Nelson Mandela became popular like never before. All as a result of our personal experiences with war. ‘Peace’ can mean the absence of war…or the inner harmony and beauty of the absence of internal conflict as in the greeting NAMASTE. “My soul recognizes your soul and …we are one.” PEACE and LOVE LiveStrong Give Peace a Chance by John Lennon Evrybodys talkin bout Bagism, Shagism, Dragism, Madism, Ragism, Tagism This-ism, that-ism, ism ism ism All we are saying is give peace a chance All we are saying is give peace a chance (Cmon) Evrybodys talkin bout Minister, Sinister, Banisters and Canisters, Bishops, Fishops, Rabbis, and Pop Eyes, Bye bye, Bye byes All we are saying is give peace a chance All we are saying is give peace a chance (Let me tell you now) Evrybodys talkin bout Revolution, Evolution, Masturbation, Flagellation, Regulation, Integrations, mediations, United Nations, congratulations All we are saying is give peace a chance All we are saying is give peace a chance Evrybodys talkin bout John and Yoko, Timmy Leary, Rosemary, Tommy Smothers, Bobby Dylan, Tommy Cooper, Derek Taylor, Norman Mailer, Alan Ginsberg, Hare Krishna Hare Hare Krishna All we are saying is give peace a chance All we are saying is give peace a chance
