Our nation has the goal of cutting oil imports in half by 2020 and Maryland has the goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2020. To help meet these goals, we need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels like coal and petroleum. The carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is almost up to 400 parts per million (ppm). Up to 350 ppm is considered a safe/normal outdoor level. ***** When we go outside to get a breath of fresh air, we are breathing ***** air that is the equivalent of well ventilated indoor air! We are lucky because people in Maryland can do several things to help. ***** Change how you drive and change how you live. Instead of a gasoline car, you can get an electric or hybrid car, or you can take trains or buses, or use a bicycle for short distances. Maryland and 7 other states (California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont) have the goal of putting at least 3.3 million zero emission vehicles on the road by 2025. There are tax incentives and Maryland is setting up a system of charging stations. Right now I charge my electric drive Smart Car in my condos garage. On the home front, of course you can install solar panels at your house and eventually make money by selling power back to the grid. But, for those of us who live in a condo or other place where solar panels arent feasible, we can switch to clean electricity easily by using our electric choice. We have the freedom to choose our electricity supplier. Go to clearlyenergy, enter your zip code and click on [compare]. Under Renewable Content, click on Go Green! Companies that provide 100% renewable energy in your area will be displayed with their prices. To check out a company, click on the price and it will go to their web page. Once you choose a company, just sign up via their web page. ***** Then you can breath easier because you have switched to clean.
