"Our national anthem" Kia ora whanau ..i am to believe this waiata was composed during the days when Apanui was a Rugby Sub Union and there were Hockey teams where the Kiritapu Hockey Trophy was played for and in the latter years the Kuhupo Gage Hickey Trophy..then there was Nett- ball...i am talking post the Second World War years of the 1945- 1958 ... my late father –in – law Hiri Tawhai composed many waiata for various occasions this Waiata of which you are speaking of is one the many... I would like to share some of the “Original Kupu “ as these were composed for this such Haerenga o Te Whanau a Apanui ki Te Tairawhiti i taua wa... Te Tairawhiti e pohiri nei Oho ana ta Mauri e Apanui e hiki tia ra Whitiki whakatika ra Nga rori ra Kia Waipiro e Te huinga o nga waka e Kume kume Totoia ra Te wkitoria i runga i te aroha Nga rori ra ki Waipiro e Te huinga o nga waka e Kume kume Totoia ra Te Tauranga kai Omaio It happened about 1963-64 of the time of 90 year celebrations of the Kura o Omaio that Hiri Tawhai re-dedicated this waiata and changed some of the kupu to how it is celebrated and sung today.
