Our national anthem turned 200 years old this weekend. Most know the popular story of the ship-bound patriot Francis Scott Key penning the lyrics while watching British naval forces bombard Baltimore during a battle in the War of 1812. Here at M&C Law, wed highlight that Key was himself an attorney on the job when he wrote the lyrics to the song, sent to negotiate the release of a prisoner. Key had a thriving DC practice, defended criminal cases and was later a federal prosecutor. In one of the human anomalies of our countrys history, he was also a slave-owner, despite his personal opposition to slavery in general(?) As we find in our practice, life is rarely black/white, usually involving many shades of gray.
