Our new little hydrocephalus puppy, Cholo... Good news and bad - TopicsExpress

Our new little hydrocephalus puppy, Cholo... Good news and bad news for Little Man. On a hydrocephalus scale of 1-10, Dr Berg said that Cholo is an 8 or a 9 with the amount fluid compared to his brain size. So he does have a more extreme case of the condition. The good news is, Cholos ultrasound showed a classic forebrain presentation of Hydrocephalus and the doctor feels he is an excellent candidate for a shunt. Cholo doesnt have his canines yet, so Dr Berg wants to wait until the end of January to do his surgery. Because Cholo is a small breed dog, he is not as concerned with him growing too much more after the surgery which would require a second shunt. In the meantime, Cholo is on steroids to alleviate some of the pressure and swelling and we will hopefully see some improvement. I asked a lot of questions regarding Pen Pen vs Cholo with diagnosis and treatment; just so that I can better understand. Pennys hydrocephalus was actually not as bad as Cholos, but her cerebellum was horrible, causing her to present much worse. This is also why a shunt wouldnt have helped her the way it will hopefully help Cholo. Everyone fell in love with the little guy and thought he was adorable. Cholo let them do whatever they wanted as long as he was on his bed, which is his security blanket (hence it being on the scale too. Lol) Hopefully the steroids will help a little, but we are scheduled for January 26th for Cholos shunt surgery.
