Our next-door neighbors planted this scary jungle vine a few years back; people often stop to look and snap a few cellphone pix, though nobody can identify the genus and species (they’re all quite adamant that it’s not a wisteria). The other day a middle-aged, Spanish-speaking couple stopped to check it out, and I ventured a remark: “¡Impresionante!” The husband trotted out some rapid-fire Spanish—no doubt something along the lines of “Pero la vid está causando daños a la baranda [But the vine is damaging the railing].” I looked helpless and made a sort of hummina-hummina gesture; without GoogleTranslate and wordreference I was at a total loss.
