Our next interview is with Marcelo Cardosa from Brazil. Our first international fly tier. The questions were in English, answered in Portuguese, translated back to English... Doing the interview gave me a new perspective on the inter-nationality of fly tying. Hello Marcelo! Thank you for doing this interview with Fly Tiers Anonymous. A group of very diverse fly tiers and fly anglers. Hello Chris Schatte! Thank you for interviewing me, I am very grateful for is the opportunity to put what the public think of sport fishing. To begin, could you give us some biographical information on yourself? I am 49 years old, was born in Rio de Janeiro, I am Brazilian, married for the 2nd time, with Dr. Rosa Martins, Medical. I have one 23 year old daughter from his first marriage. In my youth I worked with Plastic Arts and Aeromodelling. I have 3 formations medium technical level: Construction, Telecommunication and Work Safety. Graduated from Faculty Estacio de Sa, Work Safety. Worked in Construction, Architectural Design and Industrial designer designer of Steel structures. Created the MLOC Fly (Online shop for selling my flies and decorative items) in the year 2012. Nowadays, working in the manufacturing, distribution and sales in my online store. I am still without sponsors nor much recognition in my country; unfortunately my countrymen do not value my work as I would like. I like animals and being in touch with nature and fishing in various forms. In Brazil, what is the most fly fished specie? In my country we can fish almost all types of fish using flies; despite not being the type of fishing most used and disclosed. Is still seen as one of the most complex and elitist by many Brazilian fishermen who do not know how to use lines of flies and flies. The tradition of fly fishing, is not yet fully rooted in my generation, new generations of Brazilian fishermen should take care of this step. The use of artificial and natural baits still prevails in most of Brazilian fishermen. Set a fish would be hard to say, because in Brazil we have almost the size of a continent and we have a great variety of species of sport fish. The Fly Fhishing has been more widespread after Master Mel krieger, among other big international names who came to demystify the art of fly fishing, in Latin America. My Brazilian Master in Fly Fishing called Paulo Cesar Domingues da Silva, this with its 82-year-old, who has published the 2nd edition of his book (fly fishing) and I had the privilege of being with him and have his autographed book as present him with flies MLOC Fly . We have other names, in terms of artificial lures and fly that also help improve the scenario of the Brazilian sport fishing, I believe that in another 10 years well be more engaged to fish with flies and beat some world records.. How did you become interested in fly fishing? I started fishing with eight years of age, with pins and hooks made from pieces of bread; caught some frogs in a small pond near my house with some friends. At 15 I started to go fishing on the beach with very heavy bamboo rod and a single coil with natural baits such as pieces of shrimp and seafood stones. I started with 25 years of age to use artificial lures, with time I started making my own wooden lures for my use and some fishermen friends. In the 80s began to see the articles published in fishing magazines in the USA, in bookstores, where I became aware of fly fishing. From this point always sought more information on this topic that fascinated me. With the advent of the internet can have access to various issues related to persons Fly tying and fly fishing. How did you become a fly tier? Started studying on my own, (self-taught) in the 80’s, everything I could about the history of Fly Fishing in the world, forms knotted big names: the Grand Champion of Mustad ... Torill Kolbu, flies Paul Whitlock realistic; among other names recognized internationally. In the 90s, Ive felt the urge to start thinking about more complex tying flies and did my first realistic. A Fly Stone accompanying me today, in several of my photos. Coming after the other realistic flies, the Mayfly, Dragonfly, the Beetles, some nymphs, etc.. ... As per your business, could you tell us how you started and why? Everything in life starts with passion and pleasure of doing with his hands and flies sculptures, I even designed and built my furniture to tie my flies, because I like Joinery, I always use old pieces of wood and used (recycled) to this purpose. It was through long conversations with my Mother, who came the idea to assemble my virtual business, the MLOC Fly; She was impressed with the beauty of insects that made the hooks. Told me that I should sell them to fishermen flies from Brazil and perhaps the world. I commented to my mother that would not be as simple to manage and maintain a sales business and live flies these sales. But dreams can come true and Im still dreaming and working on this dream, tying flies with my own particular style. In my country are still have many economic barriers to import of fly tying materials; tools, etc. ; is the resale to the outside due to the high price of shipping orders by mail. There are times when I think about giving up everything and stop creating flies for sale; not have a sponsor or manufacturer helping me with products related to fly tying hinders more detailed exposition of my patterns. Successfully explain and publicize the my mounts steps by steps of fly fishermen because of strong competitors in my country and with better financial conditions (Sponsors); but do not have my talent and do not bother to create new varieties of flies. What is your favorite fly to tie and why? Say what the fly that like to do would be like asking a father, whats your favorite son. Each new idea which I imagine is a challenge of how to put a set of issues tied to a hook; in favor of fooling the fish. I like to tie all models that do and those that are still in drawings for mounting; over time. I have many ideas and Im scribbling on sheets of paper everything that comes to my mind, then Ill work on ideas that drew, where the prototypes are generated for new flies, then take the test in the water. When I have a chance and put the flies to be tested with the fish. And mostly always get good results. What is your favorite water to fish? I do not have a favorite fish, I think all are special, whether small or to large. I think if they are hooked on my files, I feel privileged to get this done. In the last several years Tenkara has come onto the fly fishing scene. What is your opinion of Tenkara as an alternative? Im of the opinion: The subtlety of certain methods used by masters from Japan are wonderful. I have a great respect and admiration for Japanese craftsmanship. Patience and delicacy, the use of natural materials and how shapes them so that they are efficient and beautiful, makes me really rethink certain concepts work. I do not see the problem as Tenkara Fishing technique, but as another way to deal with the subtlety to hook fish. Here in Brazil I have friends that use the Tenkara and achieve good results; whether in fresh or salt water. A matter of personal taste, I like sport fishing, sight pleased to catch and release, any arrangements which will use. What would be your advice to beginning fly tiers? I started studying other Masters tied flies, do not like to copy existing models. I try to develop new models, create new and different styles, be the rock in the shoes of the great masters, appear as a new reference point for some who are starting to make their flies. I think anyone who wants to start tying flies should keep in mind that it is an eternal struggle, when we think we already know everything about tie a fly models, we find that we still have much to learn. Have excellence in a subject just stuck their own mistakes, and not seek to hone challenges. Always try to train, observe the insects, the nature that surrounds us, make several flies and wherever possible to change colors, shapes and materials laced. Always try something new and different to see if it works; creativity and boldness, the laced do well if you try. What makes you passionate about fly tying and fly fishing? The I am an enthusiast in the art of tying flies, I am a Fly Tyer who likes to challenge the ability to create and exceed my limits. The Fly tying as everything involving fly fishing fascinates me and I try to understand a little of everything on the subject, but always relaxed. I have the urge to make my own fly rod bamboo, but due to the complexity of materials that are needed for this purpose, I am postponing my dream of building a brand with my logo. I have a big dream that haunts me, the mind from one day publish my own book on fly tying, I have not had the condition of having my flies published in magazines sportfishing Brasileiras, nor in any of the major international journals of Fly Fishing maybe this day comes soon. The creativity of making a piece of soapstone in a sculpture called Head of Brown Trout, this person shows that even stones can make art. View on a piece of plastic (PET Bottle) parts to build one flies in materials that other people see trash, I see I fly. Some people tell me that I am talented in my creations, others criticize my flies by daring colors. I say; join talent with the knowledge and will have a great chance to get famous and known worldwide. Marcelo, thank you for taking time for this interview.
