The survey also cast doubt on Tory hopes of persuading voters that backing Ukip at next Mays general election will simply dent Conservative numbers enough that Labour will get into power. Only 22 per cent of Ukip voters think their party doing well would make Mr Miliband more likely to become Prime Minister, YouGov found. Ukip is hopeful of chasing Labour out of some of its northern heartlands, having last month come within 617 votes of winning the Parliamentary by-election in the Greater Manchester seat of Heywood and Middleton. Mr Farage claims his party is gaining traction among Labour voters and ascribed last weeks Rochester and Strood by-election Ukip win for former Tory Mark Reckless to support in the traditionally Labour part of the seat.
