Our own War Memorial Stadium, featured today by the State Historic Preservation Office: In honor of Veterans Day, our National Register in Your Hometown feature throughout this week will focus on places built to memorialize the sacrifice of our nations fallen soldiers. Today we feature World War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro, Guilford County, NC. We are proud to be assisting the City of Greensboro with a Historic Structures Report through a Certified Local Government Grant to assist with the continued use of this fine structure. From the National Register nomination: The Greensboro World War Memorial Stadium, an imposing Modern Classical building dedicated on Armistice Day 1926, holds unusual significance in the history of Greensboro, Guilford County, and the state of North Carolina. It holds statewide significance in the areas of architecture, entertainment, recreation, politics/government, and social history, as a unique embodiment of civic sympathy and responsibility, respectively, for those citizens of Guilford County who gave their lives during World War I and for its sons (and daughters) who would participate in athletic contests in the stadium for a period now approaching three-quarters of a century. It stands today as the largest and costliest such memorial erected by a community in North Carolina honoring those who died in the World War.
