Our president sent this email to the campus today (and check the hat-tip to CSH). Do I even need to say we would never get an email like this from Rose or Simone? --------- To: RIT Community From: Bill Destler Date: April 1, 2014 Subject: Breakdown of the RIT weather machine I am writing to convey my apologies for the horrible Winter weather we have experienced this year. This is not entirely my fault, of course, but the person at the top is ultimately responsible and so the final responsibility for this failure lies with me. By way of explanation, as most students know the weather at RIT is controlled by the Sentinel sculpture located in front of Eastman Hall through a control mechanism located underground beneath the base of the sculpture. This mechanism is accessed through the secret tunnel linking the dormitories to the academic buildings that is used by our campus safety officers for Segway practice. The commands to the control mechanism are sent from my office using a wireless Ipad app written by students in Computer Science House. Unfortunately, a control arm in the mechanism snapped unexpectedly last Fall, and we promptly ordered a replacement part from sculptor Albert Paley. Mr. Paley, unhappily, was entirely engaged at the time constructing sculptures for his New York City Park Avenue exhibition, and was unable to deliver the replacement part in a timely manner. As a result, we have been unable to control the weather all Winter, and the result has been the coldest, windiest, and snowiest season during my tenure as President. We still do not have the replacement part, but our crack facilities management team has kluged together a solution which we will try out today. We are not sure whether this solution is strong enough to last more than a day or two, but at least we are trying to remedy this unfortunate situation. I am fully committed to implementing a more stable solution before the start of the next academic year. I am grateful for your understanding in this matter, and as always, I am thankful for your support during my tenure as President.
