Our programme for the Autumn Term starting this September is now up and live on our website with more being added each week. We also have a great programme of events lined up for Octobers Farnham Craft Town celebrations as well as some great events around Heritage Open Days in September. Some of the courses and workshops have already very nearly sold out and weve only had them on our website for a short while. If there is something youd like to book onto but missed the opportunity, then please let us know and if we can, well run extra classes. And for those of you who dont know, 318 Ceramics is one year old this September! Thank you to everyone who has booked onto our courses and workshops, volunteered with us or helped in any way. Were thrilled weve got this far and were all super excited about the year ahead. Lectures: Heritage Open Days Lecture: Terracotta & Architecture - 11th September The Farnham Pottery hosts this fascinating talk by terracotta and architectural ceramics expert Amy Frankie Smith in celebration of the Pottery and Heritage Open Days. Emmanuel Cooper Memorial Lecture - 11th December Further details will be published at the beginning of September. Master Classes: This year well be running one day Master Class/Day combinations. Your feedback told us you loved our weekend ones, but would you would prefer more of the one day ones. Numbers will be kept low to ensure a great intimate learning experience. This is a preview to what we have booked so far: Craft Town: Decorative Techniques with Steve Brown - 5th October Join Steve for this insightful class exploring the relationship between printed images and clay forms through a combination of demonstrations, discussions and practical sessions. Craft Town: Controlling Clay on the Potters Wheel with Gareth Mason - 16th October Gareth demonstrates and guides through hands-on learning, the fundamentals of controlling a variety of weights of clay on the potters wheel. Craft Town: The decorative life and works of John Pollex - 25th October This is a rare opportunity to learn, discover and work with John Pollex as he demonstrates his unique making and decorating techniques influenced by his interest in Zen Buddhism and his love for music. Family Events: Heritage Open Days: Brick Decorating Workshops - 13th & 14th September Come and learn about traditional brick making and decorating techniques and decorate one to your own personal design. Part of the Heritage Open Days workshops. Craft Town: Mobile Puppets & Creatures - 11th October Delve into the world of make-believe as you are guided through the process making puppets with clay. Craft Town: Bird Feeders and Garden Mobiles - 31st October Make pottery bird feeders and garden ornaments to decorate your garden with through the dreary winter months. Christmas Baubles - 8th November Come and decorate baubles with festive patterns using beautiful under-glaze colours. Workshops: Glazing - 21st & 22nd August A two hour workshop for glazing fired work made during classes or at home. Introduction to Throwing - 21st & 22nd August A two day workshop designed with beginners in mind to introduce the experience of throwing on the potters wheel. Students will be taught the basics including the preparation of clay, how to centre on the wheel, throwing a range of forms and finishing processes including turning and pulling handles. Craft Town: Throwing with Porcelain - 7th October This specialist one-day workshop focuses on developing skills of throwing using porcelain clay. Combining demonstrations and student practice. Craft Town: Throwing Taster Session - 9th October Throwing is an amazing skill to learn. Experience this time-honoured craft under the expert tutelage of Gareth Mason as he takes first-time throwers through the basics of throwing on the potters wheel. Craft Town: Introduction to Screen Printing - 4th May These short workshops introduce the basics of screen printing. Participants will produce their own hand-pulled art and ghost prints. Craft Town: Slip Decorating - 21st October This one day workshop introduces a range of decorating techniques using coloured slips including: stencilling, scraffito, trailing and monoprinting. Courses: Introduction to Throwing These courses cover all aspects of creating successful pieces of work thrown on the wheel including learning about clay types, preparing clay, centring, opening, lifting, shaping, smoothing and turning. Introduction to Ceramics This 10 week course is designed for complete beginners or those returning to ceramics and wish to refresh their skills or refine their making processes. Participants have the opportunity to explore and master the basic fundamental techniques of working with clay, including hand building, throwing, surface treatment and decoration. Jewellery & Metalsmithing This 10 week course, run by maker/designer Rebecca Skeels, will enable students to develop an interest in jewellery and metalsmithing. No prior knowledge is required so perfect for beginners and more advanced alike. Introduction to Screen Printing This six week course introduces the basic techniques of screen printing using acrylic inks and paint on a silk screen. Students will explore using hand-cut stencils, photographs and autography to produce bold, graphic images. Introduction to Relief Print Making This six week course explores relief print making using lino cutting techniques. Students will learn how to design and make lino plates, preparation of paper, inking up plates and printing, registration and double plate printing. All our workshops and courses have their numbers limited to either four, six or eight students as a maximum.
