Our session proposal was accepted for the FATE conference in March, 2015! Making Nature Matter: Reflections on Nature, Earthworks, Land Art, & Environmental Art in the 21st Century Increasingly complex ecological relationships exist between human beings and natural living and nonliving systems. Rather than adapt to our environment, we adapt our environment to us. The pace of our advancements is unprecedented with very little time for introspection about the world we are creating and simultaneously destroying. How do human beings make sense of the world when so much of it is man-made, manufactured, manipulated, or altered either directly or indirectly through our collective and individual actions? How do technological advancements, virtual reality, digital tools, hybrid materials, genetically modified organisms, and other artificially modified or generated environments impact how we see and experience the natural world? Do temporary and ephemeral works leave lasting impressions in a world dominated by immediacy and speed? How do earthworks, land art, and environmental art today inform and educate others? Do these works serve the same purpose as the original earthworks artists or has the work evolved with the times offering new meanings, new insights, and new revelations about nature in the 21st century? What is nature today and does it matter? In this session we invite artists, theorists, historians, teachers, and others to explore nature through the acts of making and reflecting.
