Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of those who perished in this tragedy including the over 100 distinguished medical researchers, health workers and activists, among them Prof. Joseph Marie Albert Lange and his wife Jacqueline van Tongeren, who were on their way to participate in the 20th International AIDS Conference in Melbourne, Australia. Prof Lange (1954 – 17 July 2014) was a clinical researcher from the Netherlands, specialising in HIV therapy who served as the President of the International AIDS Society from 2002 to 2004. He was also the Founding Chairman of PharmAccess Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation based in Amsterdam which aims to improve access to HIV/AIDS therapy in developing countries. Prof. Lange was also the Scientific Director of HIV[e]Ducation, an online learning system for medical doctors, nurses and counsellors working with HIV-positive people. He was also a founding editor of the academic journal Antiviral Therapy. He was a member of several societies including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society for Microbiology and International AIDS Society. We pray for their souls to rest in peace.
