Our son Jack Yates was in his senior year at college when he decided on a career in the US Army. It was very tough for us to drive him to the recruiting center in Beckley, WV, have our last meal together and leave him there. He shipped out first to Texas, and then to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for basic training. We were thrilled to attend his graduation ceremonies there before he was transferred to Fort Campbell, Kentucky as a part of the 101st Airborne, the home of The Screaming Eagles. The site for Fort Campbell was selected on July 16, 1941, and the Title I Survey was completed November 15, 1941, coincidentally the same time the Japanese Imperial Fleet was leaving Japanese home waters for the attack on Pearl Harbor. Construction of Camp Campbell began on January 12, 1942. By the time our son was stationed there Fort Campbell was a fully functioning Army Airborne Facilitiy. Jack was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky for his four years in the army, but was allowed to do a good bit of world travelling. His tours of duty took him to places like Panama, Bosnia, Kosovo, and to Germany where he met his bride to be: Ms. Denise Hinton. Jack and Denise along with their son Jacob have just moved from Boston to Hingham, MA. Congratulations to our very own personal Vet on this Veterans Day 2014!!
