The whole lower end of Manhattan smelled like jet fuel and decay, and looked like Batmans Gotham under a half inch of soot. You could smell it miles away on the subway. Few passengers that Saturday, but a few resolute folks in hard hats heading downtown. The vision of the hole and the ruble is indelible. Last month we went back. It could not look more changed. The Memorial is beautiful, grand, and somber, and the scale feels right. It was a summer day and the place was packed. I am glad we have seen it looking so grand, but it cant erase what we saw in 2001.
