Our staff and legal advocates work hard to ensure that your children in public school settings are provided with a “free and appropriate” public school education based upon a comprehensive clinical/cognitive/emotional/academic “picture” of your child’s specific needs. Given recent comprehensive changes in public school curriculum, standards, delivery of instruction, and rigid testing standards that have not been pilot tested, it is a reasonable statistical assumption to assume that some very talented and gifted children will struggle under these settings. Early Life has partnered with “Discovery Academy” to provide Utah’s first and only private education setting that integrates state-of-the-art pediatric school neuropsychology, with a wide range of formal and informal education practices and programs to meet varied educational needs of children. The “Discovery” program offers hands-on, developmentally appropriate learning activities including a toddler classes, a holistic preschool, private kindergarten through second grade, and enrichment classes for children up to age twelve. Via training and consultation with Early Life’s licensed clinical and education staff, Discovery Academy’s "Exceptional Children" program provides a uniquely appropriate learning environment for children with “varied learning needs” including students on the higher end of the autism spectrum, those with learning differences (e.g., diagnosed learning disabilities), and those who are "twice exceptional" (gifted with learning differences in some areas). Children are integrated into primary core class and enrichment classes as appropriate, but have the additional support of an experienced special education teacher, as well as outside private support from a Early Life Psychology, “Cognitive Tutor” who provides specific intervention as needed. Discovery’s individualized approach to education, with leveled learning instead of strict separation of grades, allows children to work at their own developmental pace, whether they are significantly advanced in an area or need additional support to achieve success. Early Life provides consultations, trainings and seminars to Discovery staff to ensure that their educational practices conform to best practices in developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, cultural norms, common sense, and the specific desires and needs of parents and children. After years of our clinic’s attempts to assist little one’s with learning differences adapt to public school education’s often rigid, legalistic models of learning accommodation methods, “Discovery” is a breath of fresh air in this day and age of increasing “one size fits all” educational options.
