Our stories here, whether our own or from readers like you, inspire the world. Pauline writes: Seeing your post about Tammi and her daughter reminds me of my son. He’s had a friend from preschool all the way through high school that has Down Syndrome. I’m not even sure he realized Matthew was “different” at first. He just simply liked him. They played together, and have had sleep-overs together. High school was hard. My son struggled with academia. Matthew made friends with the wrong people. His so-called friends would encourage him to do things he shouldn’t do. It broke my son’s heart. He would come home and ask why people were so mean. He would take Matthew aside and say, “Don’t do that. They are not being your friend; they are laughing at you, not with you.” As he got older, Matthew decided he didn’t want to have Down Syndrome anymore. He wanted to be “normal.” He would run away from home and have arguments with his parents, but he would always call my son and ask for help. My son has gotten up and gone out in the middle of the night to go to Matthew and make sure he’s safe, and has brought him home and called his family to let them know he’s okay. My son has not had an easy time growing up in a world where everyone is expected to be a round peg fitting in a round hole. He has been excluded from school for his lack of academic prowess and “poor” behavior. But I am proud of his love for his fellow human beings, as he is always willing to help other people out of a difficult situation. He may never be a rocket scientist, but he will always have love and real friends. ~ Shared with love ~ PIF crew ♥
