Our sympathy is just base. We come to them who weep foolishly and sit down and cry for company, instead of imparting to them truth and health in rough electric shocks, putting them once more in communication with their own reason. - Emerson. (Please note that my response to this is in regard to where it says those who *weep foolishly* and those who sit down and cry *for company* - it doesnt say everyone who has a genuine problem, nor everyone who cries, and it also doesnt say that having problems or crying are foolish and I didnt see it that way. I just wanted to reiterate that as I can see how it could be misunderstood). Being understanding and sympathetic with others is important, yet just occasionally it may be clear that the very thing making our friends miserable is something they were entirely responsible for and did to themselves. Then those rough electric shocks may be necessary and invaluable to them. If we cant be honest with our friends, kindly and without malice of course, then what real purpose are we serving in their lives, save agreeing with them: aint it awful? and what good does that do anyone? I like the way Emerson points out that the way we think and act affects our health, those things are not often enough stated or understood. Anything capable of depriving us of our happiness is not good for us and over an extended time period can create stress enough to be damaging to our health. I think those rough electric shocks may be a real kindness in the long run. Caring, honest friends are a Godsend. I hope you have them, and are them. Love to you all today :)
