Our tenants come from all walks of life and some really have - TopicsExpress

Our tenants come from all walks of life and some really have amazing stories to tell. Not long ago we told you about the lovely Nancy, who worked at the Munitions factory in Rotherwas during the Second World War – she recalled building the bombs to help with the war efforts. And now we would like to tell you about 2 more of our wonderful residents – Jo Ascombe and Betty Richards, members of our Hale and Hearty Group at Brierley Court. Jo, joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), the women’s branch of the army. She served on a searchlight battery and an east coast radar station and nearly died when a V2 fell on Woolwich, London! Betty also joined the ATS, but when she was 16! You legally had to be 18 to join but she told a little white lie in order to serve. Betty was to be posted to Cyprus and was only found out when a family member sent her a “happy 17th” birthday card – rumbled! Her manager was a little cross but kept her on to run the NAAFI bar and really enjoyed it. The ladies stories are featuring in the local history magazine, Autumn 2014, issue 34 - “In Our Age” and if you know of anyone who has stories to tell then please contact the In Our Age team on [email protected] or visit their website: herefordshirelore.org.uk
