Our time in Valparaiso has provided for many exciting and important developments with the Disciples Project. After a year of production, this has grown from a simple conversation to a large-scale international project. So far, we have been in Chile for five days, and we have established personal relationships with several of the former prisoners who are the subjects of the exhibition in Valparaiso. These individuals are local icons – we consider ourselves lucky to be in their presence, and to be able to share their complex personal and political histories with new audiences. For our first meeting of the week, we visited the town of Concón to the home of 85 year old former political prisoner Sadi Renato Joui Joui. He is the author of the noted autobiographical text referencing the terms of his imprisonment titled Chacabuco y otros lugares de detención. We have recently learned that our project featuring large-scale portraits by Alexis Mandujano will become a permanent installation in the former prison at the Parque Cultural de Valparaiso beginning November 19 on opening night where all twelve disciples will be present. This will be a new chapter in their expression of freedom. And to this final point, we are thankful to the Parque Cultural de Valparaiso for their unmatched support in seeing this project grow. Our deepest thanks are extended to the following: Justo Pastor Mellado (Director, PCdV), Alonso Esteban Yañez Avendaño (Productor y Artista visual, PCdV), Alexis Mandujano (Photographer), Cuto Reed (Translator), Cristobal Traslaviña Berrios (Social Media) & endless others. Thank you, Guy Berube (Project Director) & Adam Barbu (Co-curator & Writer)
