Our valiant leader, Dr Brett Gartrell, assists Takahe Kat during her recovery from anaesthesia yesterday. Kat had a chronic luxation of one of the digits in the left foot. The toe was curving towards the middle and would probably have had to be removed in the long run. The surgery is meant to “fix” the luxated joint in one position, and allow it to heal. The pins form a bridge or a ladder over the joints, and are held together by a bar and a light resin bonding material. The bright ring at the top f the radiograph is Kat’s metal identifying band. Takahe were thought to be extinct in 1948, when they were re-discovered. Currently takahe number around 260 animals, and as such are among the rarest, and most endangered, animals on earth.
