Our very loved, Sallie Carroll passed away this morning. A frequent Olivia traveler, (which she never thought she would experience in her lifetime) she was able to fulfill her dreams this past few weeks of meeting Wayne Dyer, going to Hawaii, buying a Ukulele and having a Ukulele lesson. I am sure she transitioned with a big smile, playing her Ukulele along the way. We love you Sallie! About Sallie: She started her military career in 1952 joining the United States Air Force, was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps and retired from United States Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1975. Lt. Col. Carroll served in Vietnam April 1971 to April 1972 where she was the Adjutant for Inventory Control Center and received the Bronze Star Medal and for meritorious achievement during operations against armed enemy of the United States. She was also presented the Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal w/Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal w/Four Bronze Stars, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, Vietnam Campaign Medal. She was a pioneer for women becoming vital members of the US Army Marksmanship Unit assigned to the Service Pistol and International Pistol Disciplines. Lt. Col. Carroll won numerous shooting awards on national and international level including the Distinguished Pistol Shooting Medal, Excellence–in-Competition Badge, Pistol w/Silver Oak Leaf Cluster and the US International Distinguished Shooter Medal. She was inducted into the US Army Marksmanship Unit Hall of Fame International and Service Pistol. Her fellow comrades distinguished her as a friend, mentor and a woman of a different caliber. She continued to be involved with veterans through her memberships in Vietnam Women Veterans Assn., Women Marine Assn., Women of the Air Force Assn., American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. And finally, was able to live her truth and be honored as not only a top woman in the military, but as a respected and acknowledged lesbian on Olivia vacations. Sallie, you were a role model to many, and we honor your service and bravery as not only a woman, but as a lesbian. We are so happy and grateful you were able to live to see the Gay and Lesbian community finally accepted and honored as a vital part of our military.
