Our volunteers are off today, so Lori and I are attending to the front desk in our Great Bend office. Its been busy: Yesterday, a single mom came for assistance; she recently lost her job in the downsizing at St Rose, and hasnt been able to secure employment yet. Her rent was due yesterday and she was in tears; she hasnt been in this situation before, and she didnt know where to turn. We made some calls, laid out some actions steps, gave her some essential items from our non-food pantry, and sent her on her way towards getting the rent taken care of. She came back to say thank you, and to let us know that she has been able to pull enough money together to pay her rent, and she even found a temporary job. We are delighted that her situation has improved, and we continue to root for her. Today, weve been seeing families with babies who are in need of help. In the first case, the very young parents are struggling on multiple levels and Grandma, who is also struggling, came in looking for a crib. We noticed that the 5-month old was extremely small for his size, but also very bright-eyed, and alert! The second baby was only 5 days old! Talk about tiny! We have walked with this mother for a while now; we know her, and we know she is trying, and she was excited to show us her new little girl. She and her husband both work, but with a minimum wage, their financial situation is very tight. We are concerned for these babies and families alike, but we are also reminded that every time a child is born, God has not yet given up on the world. There is struggle and hope all wrapped up together in those little bundles. As I write this, the phone rings; a couple has lost their house in a house fire. The Red Cross Representative on the other end of the line tells me that they can provide housing until Saturday night; Come Sunday, they will need someplace to stay. its time to make some more phone calls to see what can be done.
