Our ward choir was rehearsing All Creatures of our God and King today. The first three verses all praise our God and King; a male deity. The fourth verse, however, praises dear mother earth; a female deity. My suggestion was to change the personal pronouns for that verse: oh, praise her, alleluia! Instead of praise him. The response was generally positive--we do, after all, have in our theology, a female deity. But the choir director--my wife--declined, on the grounds that she really likes this calling, and would like to keep it.
