Our wildlife volunteers in Emakhosini Ophathe Heritage Park found these shots of kudu bulls fighting, while sorting images from the Panthera/ Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife leopard survey camera traps. Confrontations between kudu bulls usually involve the two kudu standing sideways next to each other, each trying to look bigger than the other. They very rarely come into physical contact with each other. If a battle does occur the males will lock horns and use their strength to best each other. This can be incredibly dangerous as they could die from the stab wounds inflicted by their impressive horns. There is also the potential of their horns interlocking without the ability to disentangle them. If this happens, both kudu will die a slow death of starvation if predators do not find them first. Luckily the fight captured in these images portrays an incredibly uneven match with the older bull situated on the left of the image and a much younger bull on the right. It probably only lasted a couple of minutes with the older bull walking away triumphant, with very little damage inflicted on either individual.
