Our wish at Deaf Zimbabwe Trust is to influence change of attitudes of hearing people towards the deaf and hard of hearing in our society. I was hurt yesterday when I took my son who is deaf to church. We do not have a sign language interpreter in our church but there are some young boys that normally use a projector to beam lyrics of songs and some bible verses on the two screens mounted in front of the church. I asked these young men to do some captions of the sermon as it was being delivered for the benefit of my son. The young men agreed and I thought they were going to keep their word. The whole sermon ended and they did not put up even a single caption of the message. I just thought their conduct epitomized the general attitude which our mainstream society has against the deaf and hard of hearing. The invisibility of their disability makes them easily forgotten. I will ask them again next Sunday to provide the service and hopefully they will change their attitude.
