Out in DC eating last night (visiting DC with my children to show them the sights), and a Ferguson protest came up the street next to the restaurant to a stop in the intersection. At that point, while blaring no justice, no peace, a number of protesters held up all traffic in all directions at the intersection. We left the protest to walk back to our hotel, and saw all the cars stuck in traffic waiting for the police to attempt to get through and clear the way. Most of those in cars on this Sat. night were tourists, like us, who were destined to spend possibly hours in a car held in traffic due to the protest. People who may have only had a limited time to see our nations capital (like us) were punished. In talking to my kids about the issue, I mentioned the wonderful right in America to peacefully protest. That is a right bought a paid for by the sacrifice of so many. However, I also mentioned the responsibility of protesters to consider the rights of others. In the case of this protest, what I saw was the ultimate in selfishness, as the other tourists did not deserve this. Just as those who had businesses in Ferguson did not deserve what happened after the Grand Jury decision. These tactics are becoming an embarrassment to the nation and ticking off a great many who had no opinion until now. Its time civil rights leaders spoke about against what they have encouraged and incited. This is not the kind of peaceful protest our founders had in mind and it is doing little good for our nation!
