Out of Bounds by Jeremy Abrams Every now and again, you have to be selfish. You have to think about you. Thats whats happening this week in Out of Bounds. Were talking about all, well most, of my teams and my boys. Dont worry, there will be a few wild cards mixed in. Let me kick it off with a guy that deserved to get paid and did, in a big way. The St. Louis Cardinals have signed breakout infielder Matt Carpenter 6-year, $52 million contract after having one of the most surprising seasons in MLB history. I am all for this. I go nuts over players that I just cannot walk away from the television when they are digging in, and Carp. Jr. (Im copyrighting that) is one of those guys. He will fight off pitch after pitch until he finds the one he wants or gets a base on balls and I love that in a ball player. Hes old school. Im not sure what the Cardinals lineup is going to look like just yet, but I bet my bottom dollar he will be an MVP candidate no matter where he hits. There is a lot of talk about Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony possibly heading to the Bulls. I am absolutely fine with this and I hope to see it come to fruition because Im not a big fan of the Knicks, never have been, and I grew up in Illinois watching Jordan do things that no one else will ever do. If Melo, who should have a few really good years left, does head to the windy city than we have a new major contender in the NBA. With the underrated Joakim Noah, Carlos Boozer, Luol Deng and the rest of the guys, Anthony could do some damage in the great state of Illinois. Should this trade actually happen I will be the first one to buy his jersey. Well, maybe not the first, but Im getting one. Speaking of Illinois, I cant believe I am already saying this but happy retirement to you Rashard Mendenhall. the former Illinois and Steeler standout has called it quits after just six years in the NFL. He is one of my boys, he is a Super Bowl champion and he played for one of the greatest franchises in all of sports. It just seemed a little preemptive to me. Lets change sports and once again talk about the hottest team on ice this side of the Mississippi, my St. Louis Blues. Skating into Sunday night the Blues had the most points in the league. We have a new goalie, we are on fire and I think for the first time that this could be the year. Long live the note. Dale Jr. had his thunder stolen from former champ Brad Keselowski on Sunday. I care less than about these races than I do the next Saw movie. Trust me, they will make another, and it will be terrible. At Doral, Tiger looked like the feline of old but faded, Rory was coming off of a choke fest-that no fan of golf will soon forget, so this weekend was time for a kid to step into the spotlight. Enter Patrick Reed. The 23-year-old stared the big boys in the face and killed it at the Cadillac Championship to become the youngest golfer ever to win a WGC event. The guy seems like he has a pretty good swing, but I dont know if he is a future star. He might be a one hit wonder, just like Sir Mix-a-Lot. The Wichita State Shockers took down the Missouri Valley with a perfect 34-0 record. If they dont get a #1 seed I am retiring. The snow is melting, the sun is shining and it is almost time for baseball. I smell a full MLB preview coming on. Batter up.
