Out of This World We need your help…..But first please see below….. Family Fun Day is our main JSN recruiting incentive event for all those new families that join in the months of September and early October. In 2012 we had a total 900 participants at the Homestead Air Reserve Park location. And we want to do even better this year…. Jeanne Zayas (Tequesta District T43) is the event Chair – her email jazt05@gmail and I’m the staff advisor As you can tell the name is Family Fun Day a bit different from Cub Fun Day and the intend here is to welcome the entire family, which for most families attending will be the first time at a Cub Scout event. The theme is “Out of This World” a space theme and a great opportunity to include STEM activities. This year we created one standard flyer for all districts, last year we had 2 different flyers This year again we are encouraging participants to register online, the link should be ready to go early next week Overnight Camping will be at Elmore and Sawyer only. The fee for overnight camping will be $20 and $15 if you just attend for the day Planning meetings have been held and we are planning more (if needed) and also conference calls Please reply by September 9th Jeanne – jazt05@gmail if you can run any of the below listed activities! Out of This World Family Fun Day Activities _______________ Saturn’s Ring Toss- Materials: Bucket or wastebasket, clothespins, rings. Clamp Clothespins around the rim of a bucket or wastebasket. Boys try to toss rings over the clothespins from 10 feet away. _______________ Rocket Launching- Materials: Bottle rockets _______________ Space Craft- Materials: Space related stickers, cardstock paper, markers, crayons. Scouts make a space related picture using materials listed. _______________ Geocaching- _______________ Over the Moon Archery- _______________ BB Guns Blast- _______________ Gravitational Pull- Materials: Tug-of- War rope _______________ Hot Isotope Transport: Save the World from Nuclear Destruction Materials: Ball, large rubber band, 4 20 foot pieces of rope Tie the rope onto the large rubber band by making a Lark’s head with each. Have scouts each hold an end of the rope and pull it out so that the rubber band opens enough to hold the ball, but not let it fall through. They then have to move this ball, as a team, from point A to point B, without dropping the ball. _______________ First Aid- _______________ Fingerprinting- Materials- Fingerprinting cards, ink pads, cleaner for fingers. _______________ Dodge the Asteroids- Materials- Several balls. Game of dodge ball, in circular form. _______________ Flying Saucers- Materials: paper plates, markers, staplers, hula-hoop, rope. Each boy makes a flying saucer by stapling two plates together, face to face, and decorate as desired. Divide the boys into two groups, lining up in single file about 15 feet from the “worm-hole” (hula hoop suspended from a tree branch). Each boy tries to fly his saucer through the “worm-hole”. ________________ Mini Rocket Racers Materials: Disposable drinking cup cones, markers, race track made with fishing line or string (multiple lines so that more boys can race simultaneously) The racetrack is thin string or fishing line strung between two points. The race vehicles are paper cones, threaded onto that line. The power is supplied by the Scouts blowing into the open end of the cone to the finish line. This activity can have the Scouts decorate (with magic markers) their cones. ________________ Rings of Saturn Relay Materials: toothpicks, lifesavers candy. Divide the Scouts into two teams and give each boy a toothpick. Then place a "ring of Saturn" (lifesaver) on the toothpick of the first boy in each team. He must pass the ring to the next boy to the next and so on. Once he has passed the first ring successfully, place the second ring on the toothpick. And then the third, and fourth, and as many as will fit on a single toothpick! The first team to pass the rings to the last player wins. (If a ring falls to earth, replace it with a fresh one!) _________________ Moon Race Walk Materials: Really, really, big gum boots or galoshes. Divide the boys into two teams. Have them take off their shoes and stand in two lines. Place the huge boots at the starting line and have the boys put on the "moon boots" race down to a turn-around point and return to give the boots to the next in line. Continue until all boys have finished. _________________ Bridge into Space- Materials: Monkey Bridge _________________ Space Knots- Materials: Rope Knot tying activities appropriate to Cub Scout level. _________________ Rocket in Space Slide Materials: 1 to 1½-inch disks, black or dark blue paint, glitter or glow-in-the-dark paint, 1-inch miniature rocket models (white preferred), ¾-inch PVC slide rings Equipment: Hot glue, small paint brushes, old toothbrushes, craft sticks Directions: Paint front of disk with black or dark blue paint. If using glitter for stars in background, when paint is slightly tacky sparingly sprinkle glitter on disk. If using glow-in-the-dark paint, wait until black paint is dry. Pour a little bit of glow-in-the-dark paint into a small lid or on a small paper plate. Dab toothbrush into paint to get just a little on the bristles. Pointing the business end of the toothbrush away from you and at the painted disk and with bristles pointing up, scrape the craft stick across the bristles so that the bristles “splatter” the paint onto the disk. When all paint is completely dry, use hot glue to mount the spaceship/rocket on the disk, as if in flight. Mount the slide ring to back of disk using hot glue. reply-to: Ayesha Carter or Jeanne Zayas (Tequesta District T43) Event Chair jazt05@gmail
