Out of a job! I just heard today from a fellow faculty member at Simmons College that I and a few others are being abruptly laid off at the end of this month as part of a cost-cutting measure. I still have nothing official but am convinced it is true. I’m not sure when they plan to do the legal notice, but it comes as a shock—and could not be at a more difficult time, as I leave the country tomorrow for three weeks on another field research trip and have no time to even work out a continuation of things like basic health coverage for me and for my wife that may expire June 30. Frankly, this is no way to treat someone who put in 11 years at this institution and who teaches in three departments (Communications, Political Science and Honors), plays a part in the Warburg program for international relations, chairs the all-college committee for honorary degrees, takes students to South Africa and helps them publish their reports, advises the student newspaper, advises numerous individual students, and, until now, has helped establish Simmons College in the national media as a site of important scholarship on Africa and human rights Doing this the day before I take off for a trip (well known to those making the decision) and not even offering a transition of any kind is beyond shabby. I welcome any support you can offer out there in cyberland. I am asking for a one-year extension to facilitate a smooth transition for me and for the many students who rely on me for teaching and advising but have heard nothing back on this, so I am reaching out to friends and colleagues for support. Email: President Helen Drinan , Dean Renee White , Provost Charlena Seymour Thanks Dan
