Out of the 12 months in a year I would have to say that October is my least favorite month. Now, for all you fall lovers out there, let’s not get upset just yet. There are some things I like about this awful month such as the pumpkin pie, Columbus Day, (Canadian Thanksgiving) and apple cider. I think it’s important to remember all of things historically that have happened in October, such as the first Model T rolled off the assembly line, California’s Redwood National Park was established, space exploration began, and Chicago gangster “Scarface” Al Capone was sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion. Both Yale and Harvard University were founded, construction of the White House began, and interestingly enough, three presidents were born in October: John Adams, Theodore Roosevelt and Ike-Dwight Eisenhower. October is a month that divides two seasons: summer and winter. Summer I like, winter… well, lets just say winter is my archenemy! When you wake up on those freezing mornings, it makes you miss the warm summer ones that have been left behind for the ice and snow. All those summer BBQ’s, campfires, baseball games, and shorts are all being left behind. They are replaced for shoveling, snow blowing, bundling up with winter clothes and getting your car ready for winter. In October you can put your studded snow tires on your vehicle. Since we all know what’s ahead of us, please schedule with your local tire dealer, mechanic, or your do-it-yourself person to place your winter tires on. Being in law enforcement, I get to see the first snow fly and first set of fender-benders resulting from that awful white stuff. Most people don’t even have snow tires on their vehicles for this wonderful occasion. So, in preparation for this up-coming winter season, please schedule accordingly with your tire person and when the white stuff starts flying, slow down and take your time. As my father always told me, “it’s better to be 5 minutes late and arrive in one piece then to never arrive at all”. Safe Driving! Officer Ryan Eagles
