Out on this gorgeous morning with my Chris, doing our Sunday routine: coffee from Dunkin and fresh bread, brioche, & donuts from The Kneaded Bread - and this song came on. Memories of 1976 and summer day trips with my Mom Angela, her good friends Rita Beckman & Evelyn Krangle, to Jones Beach. Those three in the front seat of Ritas 72 Bonneville & SEVEN kids packed into the back seat. Elton John was the sound track. Rita driving and smoking with one hand on the wheel, screaming south, to the beach on the Meadowbrook, radio blasting. With the other hand, Rita would reach back, swinging at all of us, catching whomever was unlucky enough to be within smack range. She would get one of us, regardless of who had stepped out-of-line ;-) It was a swat of love :-D They would pack all sorts of kitchen treats: Swedish Meatball on rye, peppers & eggs heroes, PB&J and those were for the ride out. Always Jones Beach hot dogs and fries for lunch! I didnt understand the meaning of the song then, but it makes that summer and those memories jump right back everytime. Good things!
