Outdoor weddings come with outdoor issues; like rain. #FairyTaleFriday is going to be focused on combating rain and how to not let it ruin your plans. First and foremost, get a tent. Rain is the primary reason to having a tented wedding. The only issue with this is that tents should be booked quite a bit ahead of time. You cannot wait for the weather man to tell you on Monday that it will be raining for your wedding on Saturday. Large tents book up quick, the longer the guest list, the earlier they are booked usually. Walls can be added to the sides of tents for instances of heavy rain and strong wind. We typically allow for walls to be removed and added closer to the event. Were not meteorologists and we dont expect you to be fortune tellers. Some weddings might have multiple tents or locations on the property for guests to mingle. In these cases we have done and seen a few options. The first being a Marquee. It is an extremely basic and classic tent that is put up to keep walkways and paths dry or out of the sun. Something we have seen done at quite a few of our weddings, like Maira and Alexs from this past September, is leaving umbrellas out for guests to use. Maira and Alex had many tents, most of which were not connected and a storm was on the forecast for the day. They also had a covered pavilion further away and one of our luxury restroom trailers tucked away for guests to use in private. They just kept a variety of different umbrellas right at the entrances of the different tents. Some couples choose to coordinate their umbrellas with their theme. Buying only ones that match their colors and then putting them in a pretty basket or stand. In the pictures from Maira and Alexs wedding you would never be able to tell that a fierce storm hit in between set up and the guests arriving. Our Day-of-Coordinators actually had to take linens and chair cushions to a laundromat to dry them from rain coming in sideways on the sides that did not have walls up. Another thing to think about with the weather is your guests that smoke. Whether you think you dislike the habit or not, most weddings will have at least several guests that smoke. If you do not want to get a whole tent or marquee devoted to them, a good idea is patio umbrellas. Another way to survive the rain is to have a back-up plan. We always tell our clients to have a sunny plan and a rainy plan and to have them be easily interchangeable. Weather can change at the drop of a hat sometimes and not knowing what to do in that case or the other options being to difficult to achieve will not make for a happy wedding day. One of the most common elements of an outdoor/tented wedding is the dream of having your first dance under the setting sun or the shining stars. This works out beautifully and romantically if the weather cooperates but if not, we try to prevent it from being a disaster. Some couples can actually add another tent within days or hours of the wedding to cover the dance floor. Most however cannot so we like to have two floor plans. The dance floor can be put under the main tent and if need be head, buffet, cake or even guests tables can be placed on it until the dancing begins. This is when the staff can swoop in and (re)move tables. Rain is not the end of the world or a wedding. It can be easily dealt with and incorporated into the plans so that everything still goes off without a hitch. Do not worry about the elements when having a tent wedding because that is exactly what the tent is for.
