Outlook for Hawaiian waters through Friday August 2: the moderate southeast swell will peak early next week then gradually subside. Rough and dangerous surf generated by tropical storm Flossie is expected early next week, mainly along east facing shores. A new south southwest swell arriving late Tuesday may boost surf along the south shore near the advisory level on Wednesday and Thursday. Southern hemispheric trades were stronger than normal 7/21-24 within 110-150°W. A tropical surface trough near 120°W gave more northward component to the usually more westerly-aiming trades. Wave models estimate the dominant direction from 150 degrees. Short-period breakers are expected to rise within small to moderate levels from 140-160 degrees on Sunday 7/28 and hold into Wednesday 7/31. The jet level ridge over and SE of New Zealand broke down on 7/23 as a trough amplified. At the surface, a low pressure dropped to below 950 mb. The system tracked from south of Tasmania 7/23 to SE of New Zealand 7/24. It continued a fast track eastward and is south of French Polynesia 7/26. The system had storm- to hurricane force winds as it passed S of New Zealand, thus moderate to marginally high surf episode is expected locally. Long-period forerunners are due on Wednesday with a slow upward trend in surf size. The episode will likely peak on 8/1 from 180-200 degrees. Moderate to marginally high, long-period surf from 180-200 degrees is predicted for 8/1, dropping to moderate levels by 8/2 A subtropical low pressure formed near 30°S, 130°W 7/25, associated with the long-lived enhanced southern hemispheric trades. A narrow fetch of gales is expected to last through 7/26 then weaken. It could keep small to moderate breakers from 140-160 degrees for 8/1-3. Aloha
