Over 34,000 flee home amid floods in Indonesias Aceh, West Java Dec 23,2014 JAKARTA, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Floods that have hitting Aceh and West Java of Indonesia since Thursday have internally displaced about 34,642 people, an official said here Tuesday. In Tamiang district of Aceh in northern tip of Sumatra Island, the flood submerged about 2,370 houses, forcing some 28,000 people to take shelter in makeshift tents and buildings at higher ground, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the national disaster management agency told Xinhua by phone. In western Java Island, West Java, the overflow of Citarum river has receded, but the waters still inundated over 5,000 houses on Tuesday, said Sutopo. Hence, 6,642 people remain living at shelters, he said. Local disaster management agency officials, along with police and soldiers, have distributed foods, medicines and other basic needs to the displaced but more foods, medicines, blankets, clothes, milk for children and others are needed, said Sutopo. Indonesia is frequently struck by floods and landslides during heavy downpours.
