Over a week later and social media and traditional media alike are still abuzz over U2. That is awesome. Im trying to remember when the last time a rock band was the biggest news story in the world for even a couple days, let alone a week. Probably Kurts suicide. So over 20 years since a rock musicians actions have captured the attention of a planet. Before Kurt, the last time was probably in 85 at Live Aid, when it was... U2. Crazy to think that theres a group of terrorists in the middle east beheading people simply for not being Muslim, but U2 is the topic that sparks the most rage. Mind you I guess that makes sense because if you live in North America, unlike ISIS, theres at least a chance Bono will come to your town and convert some people. Crazy to think there appears to be an entire American sports league that condones beating women and children, but thats less controversial than U2 wanting people to hear their new tunes. Mind you I guess that makes sense since at least U2 can still consistently fill football stadiums across the US. All this because people are mad they got some free music... wait no that cant be it. Hell, it was peoples insatiable appetite for free music that put the music industry where it is today *cue flush sound*, forcing artists and distribution companies alike to find inventive ways to stay relevant and fiscally solvent. Must be something else causing the fury. Id bet a large sum of money that if it had been say, Foo Fighters doing the same thing U2 just did, it would be considered thee coolest, most generous, least egotistical thing to happen in music history. So its definitely not the free music causing people to throw these week long kindergarten style tantrums. Is it because its Bono? Yeah its probably because its Bono. The guy is just so preachy and pretentious and ego driven. Spends way too much of his time helping poor people and AIDS patients. Seriously, dick move, dude. What a douche. Thankfully we have real musicians... er musicians wives/reality TV judges like Sharon Osborne to put U2 in their place. Yes, U2 has totally degraded music by offering it for free... and pulling off a PR coup that has led to so many sales... say it again, sales, of their back catalogue that 24 of their titles sit in the top 200 at the moment. Sharon Osborne... the last time he got something right was... I dont know, sometime well before her wedding. I can kind of understand why the easily manipulated by media casual observers and the irrational U2 haters can somehow be convinced that distributing your music to 500 million people could somehow be a bad idea... but for people in the biz to not get it, thats kind of disappointing, though I assume their motivation for whining is largely based on jealousy. Anyhoo... theres my final word on the tragedy that was the free music giveaway of 2014. Im super glad we all managed to survive, and that no one lost any limbs or their head (literally anyway). We can now move on to the other great injustices of the world. I heard Red Lobster offers free biscuits with their meals. WE MUST STOP THESE MONSTERS!
