Over a year ago, I had a call from the office line at the Trinidad Guardian. At the other end was a clipped English accent asking about Cedros......And then began my intense admiration for Josh Surtees. His immense capacity for vivid settings, creation of powerful character sketches and just plain damn writing ability have been a neverending source of great reading material week in, week out. From his daily news pieces to his London Calling column, Josh segued from being an outsider to fitting within the underbelly of the Trinidad psyche like that stray lego brick you can never find when you need it. If you did not read his intense piece on the Wet Fete experience (I now know I can dry a wet phone in a bowl of rice), then you missed out on something special indeed. Josh also found a place as the dogged investigator and reporter on many stories related to heritage affairs-from the happy fairy tale of Boissiere house to his swansong, the grim fate of Greyfriars kirk. Josh fell in love with Tobago and introduced my name to readers of the Guardian (UK) in a Top 10 Heritage Sites shortlist...thank you my friend.....Now that he leaves us to return to London, I am certain that many who were enthralled by his writings wish him godspeed and much luck in future endeavours, but also with the hillbilly-esque quip YALL COME BACK NOW, YHEAR?.....Its been a blast Josh, we gonna miss you.
