Over and over you say “I don’t want to make the same mistakes you made” But when I tell you that you are You ignore me. You get angry, frustrated, feeling as though I lecture you. When will it occur to you I’m trying to protect you from my mistakes? When will you realize, I am desperately trying to stop you from following in my footsteps, That my emotion, frustration, impatience are all driven by my fear for your well being? What words do I need to say in order to get your attention – and keep it? What tone will get through to you and reawaken your trust in me? Have I ever once made you feel that your best interest wasn’t mine? How can my unconditional, unquantifiable love be rivaled by your inexperience and naivety? How I wish I knew the answer that so many parents have sought before me. How to save my child. Save my child from my own mistakes. Save my child from being hurt. Save my child from feeling anguish. Save my child from the cruelty of others. Impart the lessons I’ve learned So that she appreciates those mistakes because of my story and not her own experiences. I will always try, if you’ll just listen with an open mind and trust my love for you.
