Over-experienced: Anyone else get a high from making a post or comment on here that gets some attention? I do. After making a post, Ill constantly come back to it. Normally via my phones push notifications. The social validation feels good. It feels really good. It gets me high. Its distracting. Eventually Ill shut the notifications off, but at that point Im already hooked. I come back craving the high. That little red dot with a number sign. It is beautiful that us humans are able to exchange such powerful emotions through a click of a button. The problem I face is that it is extremely distracting. The high that I get from making a post and constantly looking back stops me from getting work done. In the past I wouldnt even notice my reduced productivity because Im feeling so good. What I noticed was that for two days afterwards my mood was lowered. I actually experienced a withdraw from the high. My attention and productivity gets decreased. I constantly hop onto Facebook with the subconscious expectation of some mental stimuli. I feel lonelier. Without that social validation, I crave social interaction to fill the void. To avoid the irony of this post, Im going to turn off notifications. Ill do my best to resist looking back at this post for a few hours. I assume a few of you have experienced this. By sharing these thoughts, it could possibly benefit those who have experienced this too. Im sure there are some interesting physiological studies in this space. Thank you for getting me high Guelph. Yours truly.
