Over generations, livestock and crops were bred to be robust and adapted to their immediate surroundings. Modern agriculture is threatening to this cultural and biological heritage. Even in organic farming it is increasingly the case that more hybrids are being used. Old breeds and varieties disappear not only from the fields and farmlands, but also from the consciousness of those responsible. In Central and Eastern Europe, organic farming has become, with 3 million hectares, a major growth sector, but few initiatives work on organic seed breeding and multiplication. Old plant varieties that are suitable for organic cultivation still exist but, without proper concepts for their use, there is a danger that they will be eradicated. The EkoSeedForum – the European Conference on organic plant breeding, organic seeds and crop biodiversity will take place 20th-22nd March 2014 in Poznan, Poland. SAVE Foundation, with over 20 years of experience of conservation of agricultural diversity, wants to set out at this event the relationships between organic farming and agrobiodiversity and discuss opportunities and identify successful models. The Conference languages are English, Polish, German and Russian. For more details and to register please go to ekoconnect.org/en/ekoseedforum.html
