Over on Goodreads, Laurie Campbell asked me if there was a sequel to DULCINEA. (Goodreads ate the answer I was giving her and dumped me back to FB, so here I am answering. Scroll past if you dont care.) Yes, DULCINEAS DRAGON is half written (and the last chapter is also written), but at the time I was working on that series (1996-97), I was still fooling with agents and trying to get representation, because that was the ONLY way into publishing. DULCINEA even was the first runner-up in the 1996 Warner Aspect First Novel Contest, but they kept telling me it was too long and too ambitious for YA, and that YA was never read by anyone but adolescents. (This was before Harry Potter!) The agent who kept me whipped into a frenzy with the Im going to offer representation to you, but wait . .. just wait a bit more letters and phone calls for over a year and a half (but ultimately said her boss turned it all down and forgot me!) told me that YA fantasy was dead (!) and that mysteries were the hot genre. I had an idea for NICE WORK, Jacquidon Carrolls first adventure, and started working on that one. It took me a while to figure out how to write a mystery fair play properly, so there went a few more years. Also had the idea for MARFA LIGHTS and began it. LITTLE RITUALS was a detour for a book of my heart, but chick lit was declared dead just before it went to the next agent (one who also encouraged me and said I was ALMOST THERE and should try a little harder, which wasted another year.) I would love to go back and finish that sequel, DULCINEAS DRAGON, after I have done the April series that I am committed to and very excited about. Now that I dont waste half my time fretting about whichever agent is sending me revisions and letters that are carrot-on-a-stick, I have time to write and publish. Promotion takes half my time now, though (sigh). I hope to get the chance to revisit Dulcie and her magical world!
