Over seven hundred years ago, on the 5th of July 1295 France and Scotland, represented by John Balliol (Balliol College in Oxford was named after his father, John de Balliol) and Philip IV decided to form an alliance against England. This “Auld Alliance”, formed in 1295, was based on the agreement of supporting the other side, if they were going to fight against England. This was caused by the fear of England’s expansion plans. This mainly military contract also affected the social life of the partners.
