Over the course of my career, Ive watched countless colleague and friends sign off for the last time and retire. With rare exceptions, their exits have fallen into two categories: 1. Those who spent months and years counting down the days until they hung it up. 2. Those who woke up one morning, decided that they had had their fun quota of work and were gone as soon as they could submit their paperwork. Both have seemed completely abstract because I (usually) love my work and cant wait to get it started every morning . . . usually! The week or so before a just-completed vacation, I thought that I had just experienced option #2, even though Ive got a little over two years before Im eligible for a full pension. However, its amazing how a little rest and relaxation rejuvenates the mind and body, proof positive that Stephen R. Covey was right with his habit #7: Never be so busy cutting wood that you dont take time to sharpen the saw. Blade fully sharpened. And back hard at work, both in the office and now my hotel room, after 45 minutes of cycling. Feeling great. And concluding that option 2 is definitely back out there, somewhere. :-)
