Over the course of the past few months, core European values - - TopicsExpress

Over the course of the past few months, core European values - democracy and respect for human rights - have been challenged in Hungary. Civil society organisations have been threatened and raided by police, and attempts have been made to curb media freedom. At the same time, incoming European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has nominated Tibor Navracsics, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, as the next European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Citizenship. In light of these development, the European Youth Forum has joined other members of Europe+, an alliance of 40+ European civil society organisations, in issuing the following statement. We call on Mr. Navracsics to act as a true watchdog of European values, which Hungary endorsed when it joined the EU in 2004, and to work for a more inclusive, plural and social Europe.
