Over the holidays, I made an observation that confuses me... People can get so worked up over a weather event that may or may not happen. They want to know days in advance what MIGHT happen so they can be prepared. People will find time to re-schedule appointments, alter travel plans, make different arrangements for kids, have the generator ready, and of course get to the grocery store to stock up on food just in case they MIGHT be spending 24 hours inside. As the weather event gets closer, the anxiety gets worse. Weather sources are constantly checked and rechecked for any changes. People start sharing weather information and notifying friends and relatives. Grocery store shelves are cleared, and its usually the most unhealthy items that are gone. All this planning, preparing, continuously checking weather updates and warning others takes a lot of time and energy. So this is my confusion.... Why doesnt the act of looking in the mirror or stepping on a scale and realizing that ones weight has become out of control trigger a response that its now time to start planning, preparing, and making changes? Unless some steps are taken to prepare, ones health is 100% in jeopardy. Its not that this MIGHT happen, it will happen! Continuing to eat unhealthy and being inactive will result in consequences far greater than a day or two of snow or ice. Taking time to prepare healthy food or rearrange a daily schedule to include even a few minutes of exercise is not really that much when you look at what will happen if you dont. So I ask everyone to start treating you own health as a much more important event than an inch or two of snow.
